SublimeI bought Biosphere's 'Substrata' in 1997 and gave it a cursory listen and then put it away. Last night, I took it out and played it loud. It was sublime.
'Subtrata' is a driving, atmospheric multi-layered affair, on par with the best of the early Delerium effort. And no, this isn't one of those a chill-out albums.
I have most of the Bel Canto CDs and this one is absolutely different from them.
"Sublime" is exactly how I'd describe it too man. Probably his best yet, though "Cirque", from "Touch" records is a close second. I've never heard anything by Bel canto though. Any good?
ReplyDeleteSteve, I don't know how really to describe Bel Canto. They are certainly unusual. There is a mix of electronics, ethnic-related sounds, Anneli Drecker's unique vocals. It certainly more substantial than cheesy fare like Deep Forest and Enya. It's not Dead Can Dance. It's not Enigma. I don't know how to really describe it. I enjoyed them. The albums can be very diverse in feel. I guess that is where the difficulty can lie.
ReplyDeleteSteve, I think some of the reviewers on Amazon has described the sound well. And there are samples there.
ReplyDeleteI like Bel Canto but it is nothing like Biosphere. Hence, when I first heard Biosphere nine years ago, I didn't know what to make of it. Today, I recognised its brilliance. Would you recommend the other Biosphere albums? They are hard to find here. Borders had carried 'Substrata'.
