Curious airfield

Changi airport is on the right of the Googleearth photo below. On the right, there is a mysterious airfield which is north of the Changi naval base.

This is, of course, reclaimed land off Changi. A runway with marks for helicopters and aircraft. There is no aircraft on the runway.

Could it be the new area for the Singapore Airshow?

I remember several years back when we lost the Asian Aerospace, that it was partly due to their reluctance to share the cost for building a new area for the show.

Since then, I've always assumed that the building project will still continue for our own show.

That would make sense. A field for the Singapore Airshow.

The new place for the display is another place by the sea though where the aircraft can do acrobatics over the sea.

Reed Exhibitions, is part of Reed Elsevier, and is unlikely to want to invest in our local infrastructure. I think they were looking only at short term gains.

From what I can remember, the current location is a temporary one while a new facility was being built.

I don't think it's unreasonable for Reed to refuse to pay for our infrastructure. It's like asking Disney on Ice to partly pay for a new ice rink.

I was in MINDEF during the last Asian Aerospace, and this was the talk floating around then.

I'm not sure if it were facts, or just unsubstantiated water-cooler talk.

Wait, it can't be, Ken.

The Changi International Exhibition and Convention Centre is right by Nicoll Drive and Telok Paku Road, north of Changi Airport and is far from this airfield.

The aircraft doing acrobatics would land in Changi airport and get towed here in between performances.

Yes, you are right regarding Reed Exhibitions. Who would want to pay for that? It doesn't guarantee returns.
