Cat in Mandarin is 'Mao'. Yes, the pronounciation is the same as that dead dictator but the Chinese character is totally different. Many words in Mandarin have the same sounds but totally different meanings.
The first time I found the name Mao outside of the famous dictator was in an old Jackie Chan movie, in which he played a policeman named Mao. Then I started to learn that it had to be a more common name.

Dmarks, I am not sure of the surname Mao and which Chinese character it represents. You are probably right in that it had to be a more common name. Strangely enough, I don't think I know anyone with that surname.
