Velocity

The new extension at Novena Square was named 'Velocity'. I wonder about the trend of naming malls with a city suffix, Vivocity, Suntec City, Raffles City, Velocity...

This new extension should effective double the 'lett-able' space in Novena Square. Velocity houses mainly retailers dealing in goods and services of a sporting nature. Posted by Picasa

there's still Ngee Ann City.

it's also used in prefix instead of suffix.

City Plaza.

You're right Little Fish. Forgot about that.

There is something about how these new complexes are self-contained with respect to the urban environment and are essentially hostile in that they are bad public spaces and does not relate well to their surroundings.

Thanks Zero, that is certainly news to me. I'm surprised.

agree with your perception of "city" concepts.

however they do try to create an alternate public space within the grounds. like Vivocity has got the water features, Ngee Ann has the huge plaza in front, Raffles has the huge atrium with natural skylight and plants/water feature for sitting about.

great for socialising.

I echoed the sentiments expressed in 'The Seduction of Place' by a professor in architect and a social critic in a rather simplistic way. I do think he is right. In a sense, a city within a city.
