Walking Sticks for Old Ladies

I just received a telephone call while I was writing something in the office. This old lady with a shrill, crackling voice called...

Old Lady: Do you have the Nordic Walking Stick?

Me: No, we don't carry them.

Old Lady: Do you know where in Singapore I can find them?

Me: I'm sorry but I don't.

Old Lady: All the shops in London and Amsterdam carry them.

Me: I would suppose so.

Old Lady: You don't know where I can find them?

Me: I would suppose you can find them in a shop that sells walking sticks.

Old Lady: Where is that?

Me: I don't know.

Old Lady: Everybody has them.

Me: Hmm.. I have never seen one. Not in Singapore.

Old Lady: Oh. Thank you.

She hangs up. Odd.

depends on where you work.

it's not too difficult to find. first place that comes to mind is that outdoor store around capital area.

maybe the atas pharmacies at Mount E or Gleneagles?

so where do you work?

You are amazing! How did you happen to know?

I used to go hiking in the Yorkshire Dales, the Pennine and a couple other places quite a bit. Yes, I have my compasses, detailed maps (surveyors?) and so forth. However, I haven't got a walking stick for that. And when we needed one, we just use sturdy branch...

Oh, I work in a warehouse in an industrial estate in the middle of Singapore, somewhere near Toa Payoh and Bishan.

haha, I was from Uni of York and was the quartermaster and merchandise rep of the outdoor society. so every sunday i'll bring uni students around the yorkshire dales or north york moors. usually a 7 hour walk of about 12-15 km. with an hour's lunch at a local pub.
i guess you'd be familiar with the ordnance survey maps. i was amazed by the accuracy and details found in the national mapping agency.

I guess you are familiar with Ingleborough and the surrounding towns?

I wanted to visit the North York Moors but I can't recall if I ever did. York is a wonderful place which I visited frequently.

Yes, I do have one of them. For the Pennines, I used a tourist map! That is not a good idea.

I frequently go alone. Sometimes, I go with a French friend who is also into hiking.

Yes, you are right about the distances. One can cover quite a large distance when one is over there.

Did you do any spelunking?

just back from sailing....

the uni did have a cave and pothole club but...being a student with measly budget, the trips and equipment rental were too expensive.

the outdoor society did organise yearly three-peaks challenge but again....lack of funds....ok, so maybe it's cause of thie unfounded worry that i will be unable to complete the circuit hahahahaha...

Little Fish, I didn't do any spelunking either. I don't like confined spaces. After, we live in crowded Singapore. Hahahahah. We have our confined spaces.

The Great Outdoors were wonderful eh? Did you ever visit Whitby or Scarborough?
