Rules of Engagement

William Friedkin simply seems to have lost it since 'The Exorcist' and 'The French Connection'. This is a run of the mill kind of fluff that Hollywood regularly churns out. Highly predictable.

Badly framed and unimaginative shots. Yes, he's using his little handcam again.

It's yet another honourable men kinda of flick.

What a waste of time.

I liked 'Sorcerer' what he made in 1977 that 'Tangerine Dream' did the music for,it was a remake of 'Wages of Fear'

'To Live and Die in L.A' in 1985 was also pretty good as was 'Rampage' in 1988, but he has done his fare share of stinkers !

I have only watched:

'To Live and Die in LA'
'The Hunted'
'Rules of Engagement'
'Jade'
'The Exorcist'

and possibly more.

The later ones are convoluted. And somehow, he has a way of killing his protagonist in films without any resolution. I don't mind ambiguity in endings as I watch a lot of European art films previously but his endings leave a lot of untied ends. You know what I mean.

I enjoyed 'To Live and Die in LA' with its vaunted car chase scene (against the traffic) and ultra violence (for its time) quite a bit too.

Friedkin does have a way with soundtracks. He had Loreena McKennit in 'Jade', a specially composed Wang Chung score in 'To Live and Die in LA' (which was actually surprisingly good), and of course the famous 'Sorcerer'. The soundtrack was of course special and composed independently of the film. Heheh. Tangerine Dream. I have only seen the old black and white 'Wages of Fear' but not 'Sorcerer'. I wonder.

'Rampage'? I will go check. Thanks!
