T-55

The T-55, a further development of the T-54, was built in great numbers following the Second World War. Built as the successor to the unsuccessful T-44, the T-55 formed the major armoured component of Warsaw Pact in the early years together with the late model T-34/85s, JS-2s and SU-100s. The T-55 mounts a D-10T2S 100mm gun with a calibre length of 56. The theoretical rate of fire is 7 rpm while in reality, the rate of fire is about 3-4 rpm. The hull front has 100mm of armour at 60 degrees and the turret front has 205mm of rounded armour. The T-55 continued to be built in large numbers even after the introduction of its successor the T-62 due to its much lower cost. Posted by Picasa
