Enigma

The manse was standing on the site of an ancient burrow in the desolate country. The weathered monoliths which surrounded the manse stood in mute testimony of an earlier period where unspeakable horrors walked the land.

Where did you learn to draw like that? Were you from Lasalle or NAFA or a design course somewhere?

PoppingPimples, indeed, the tall chimmys are somewhat reminiscent of certain factory complexes. I was aiming to draw more chimmys actually. I wanted a somewhat 'gothic' feel to the building. The house was to small for more details unfortunately.

Elaine, thank you. Do let me know when you start an artblog. And if you don't mind, I would like to link to it. Are you planning more acrylic pieces soon?

AG, I think there are several blogs devoted to the arts around here. Those artblogs cover plays, films, performance art and more. I am hesitant to even call my work art as they are more illustrative in nature. Swift sketches of a rather minor kind. An observation of the environs. And also imaginery landscapes and figures. I don't know. What do you think? You have an artblog now. You were thinking of a communal one shared by several?

Isa, I have been drawing since I was four. Continuously. In time to come, with practice, one refines one's sketches. No, I am self-taught though I did have an art tutor for a short while when I was thirteen or so and she was always demanding that I draw that apple, pear or vase.

I have a few hundred sketches lying around, some good, some mediocre, some bad and others unfinished. The last serious piece of work I did was about a decade or so ago. A long time. Since then, I lack the energy and time to really commit myself. I have been thinking though.

I mentioned in a post earlier that there are a lot of really good illustrators (note that I didn't say artists) in Singapore. Their work is worthy of inclusion in major comics, in Spectrum collections and as conceptual art for films with effects. And they are as skilful as the professionals aboard. Their work is astounding.

Hey Merv, would you be interested in sketched figureheads a la Red Meat (http://www.redmeat.com) for your webcomics? I could do silly ones of people for you.

well. a forum relating to the blogs about arts in singapore i suppose. could be anything, post up yr works, illustrations, etc etc... write up about plays blah blah blah.

i think it'd be pretty cool

Chuang Shyue Chou said...

Well, sure. Do you have any forum in mind?

AG said...

i have no idea! do you know if there are any such forums in singapore?

Chuang Shyue Chou said...

I don't.

There was an arts magazine some years back. I think it folded. I am generally very unaware of the scene in Singapore and for that matter anywhere else.

csc, would definitely take you up on the sketched figureheads idea but hehe, writing for strips is not my forte. the 2 cheeky old men thing i did was coz i didn't have anything else to write haha.

Heheh. Same here. I had some ideas last night. Tonight, while I looked at it, they appeared more angry and humourless than funny.

Let me know if you ever want sketched stuff. It will take me some time as I draw only when I get the mood...
