Teutonic Knight

A drawing of a Teutonic Knight based on a simple sketch of a figure in a book. I have given it texture and shadows.

The Teutonic Order was originally one of the three religious orders present in the Holy Land. By the thirteenth century, the order was settled in Northern Germany and with another religious order, the Sword Brothers, it launched a series of crusades against the pagan Prussians. The Teutonic Order and the Sword Brothers continued expanding into Livonia and Poland-Luthuania until 1410 at the Battle of Tannenberg.

'Angels with silver wings
Shouldn't know suffering
I wish I could take the pain for you
If God has a master plan
That only He understands
I hope it's your eyes
He's seeing through'

A very partial list. It's not possible to list them all.

My current faves, at least for the last five or so years, are electro-industrial (ebm) and electro-gothic. (Don't mistake them for metal-industrial and metal-gothic, those are very different. Don't mistake them for MTV goth like Evanescene and others. They wear heavy makeup but they aren't really goth...)

So, if you say genre, it would be ebm and electro-gothic. Those CDs on my favourites list in the blog are basically of that nature. I will be posting more on this towards the end of the month.

If you interested in trying them, I can direct you to a few websites.

o.o omg. that's a reallllllly looooonnnnnngggggg list.. industrial is nice. metal-goth is nice.

Yea, could you give me a few sites? I'm quite keen to explore other genres. Preferably, the ones from your recommended selection.

...and your list above - Wow!

Thanks for compiling the super long list.

I will reply sometime tomorrow. I have some links. The problem about samples is that they often fail to convey the intended feel. You lose the emotional impact, especially for goth tracks as there is a strong build-up of the atmosphere if you will.

Metal, not my cup of tea. Heh.

Chuang Shyue Chou said...

Okay, here we go. A long reply.

A note. These are electronic in nature and some of them feature heavy, harsh, processed and distorted vocals. Many industrial bands utilised heavy processing for vocals. Many would also feature anti-establishment themes. End of civilisation, the evils of religion (so, if you are easily offended by the images... steer clear), the coming of a dark future, totalitarian governments, state control, media control, dystopian futures, cybernetics, robotics, angels, demons, paganism, pseudo-medieval music, S&M, etc. Of course, these are themes and imagery. Nothing beyond that.

No industrial metal and gothic metal for me. Okay, maybe I do listen to a little NIN.

For the German group In Strict Confidence, try the following tracks:

Emergency
Engelsstaub
Babylon
Seven Lives
Herzattacke

Samples can be found at:

There is really a lot more but I really can't go on and on and on and on and on...

Thanks. I enjoyed Faith And The Muse and The Azoic.

Faith and The Muse somehow reminded me of Enya and Enigma. The Burning Season was a little trance but it's quite ok.

Not a fan of trance and techno so I've never quite explored to electronics. Goth however is quite a change from the usual crap electronics you get from techno and trance.

Chuang Shyue Chou said...

Anyway, there is a wide variety of Goth. Metal goth, ethereal goth, industrial goth, pop goth, electro-goth, folk-goth, etc. There is no one sound for goth really.

If you like trance or techno, I can recommend quite a few. I don't know the latest developments but I have been to tremendously great concerts from Orbital, Banco de Garia, Underworld and a couple of others. I would recommend Orbital's first, second, third and fourth albums. For Banco de Gaia, I would recommend the first three. Underworld, only the third album. My friend, Eugene, would recommend the latest.

And no, I don't like Moby.

If you like Enigma, you could try Delerium's 'Semantic Spaces' and 'Karma' albums. They are pretty good. Deep Forest is a crap derivative of Enigma though.

Hello Saito,

I know of a few 'goth' groups in Singapore over the years. There was a group on the Meetup site and MSN Groups a few years back. There were two gatherings or so but somehow everything fizzled out.

Yes, you are right about the few who listen to EBM/Synthpop/Futurepop/industrial though there are actually quite a number of goths around from what I understand. Different breeds if you will, into different things like black metal, emo, poetry, piercings, etc.

I am actually surprised to hear from you as I thought the numbers listening to this sort of music is pretty much limited if not almost nonexistent.
