Surprise

I drew a pencil outline quickly. I decided that I would use pencils and pigment ink for this piece. I did the ink shades and these were followed by the pencil shades and finally more ink. I also used a gold and a white pencil later. This is not done in my three usual favourite style of drawing. It's experimental.

Just love to see everyone's different interpretation of the word. This is great...very evokative.

an excellent use of "negative space" to denote the dapples and shafts of light in this wonderful work.

Experiment or not, you've done a marvelous job compositionally. The drawing leads the eye right to the surprise. Lots of action and movement the way you've drawn it as well. Terrific!

This looks really eerie...it's interesting to compare the two different body languages! Your process sounds like you were really playing around...it turned out well. I did some experimenting this week too. It must be in the air!

Have you ever entered your works in competitions? I dare say you should, that is if you wish to.

Great design. Love the way you created the atmosphere.

Nice pencil drawing, especially the direction of the stokes and negative space helps to lead the viewer to the main subject

Scrooge? Ghost of christmas yet to come? I think this is marvelous!
I know it is different for you but it has the same impact as your others. It seems more free and yet more involved at the same time.

Wow! I like this one...

The shades and shadows you portray cast a dramatic story and placed the object of fear in a pedestal.

Great job man!

This is quite a dramatic piece-nice contrast. Great take on the theme. Cheers!

Ly3n, thank you.

Catnapping thanks. The image did turn out better on screen than on paper!

Thanks Mick!

Carla, this is such a wonderful platform to experiment! Well, it did really turn out better after I scanned it! Thanks!

Thanks Will. Wait till you see some of the really good work the others on www.illustrationfriday.com have put out. Hahah. No, I am not up to scratch to earn a living and cater to the clients' wishes.

Tze Kwang, I have entered a competition. I did have a piece selected for the Singapore Art '95 national exhibition and three pieces selected for the Singapore Art '97 exhibition. Well, I guess the entry requirements weren't very steep. After all, art is very subjective.

Thanks Queen Tut.

Thank you Tony for your kind words. I try to create a feel if I can, always.

Vince thanks! Coming from you.

Idahl, yes, it is a lot more free than my usual.

Aridewa, I was trying to create a darker vision, a feeling of dread. I should experiment more. This, of course, serves as a preliminary sketch if I should decide to embark on a more elaborate piece.

Thank you Holly!

Sorry I got to this one late! I love to see raw drawings like this one--very cool! I applaud you for experimenting (makes me want to more myself now). Also, THANKS for turning me on to this great site and, again, giving me a much needed push.

Steve, more often than not, the results aren't to my satisfaction as they are too raw and I guess I find it lacking?

I like the imagination and thought you put into each piece. Sometimes, I let my mood guide me and it becomes an automatic thing. A habitual piece of a forest glade would just be drawn. That's why it's amazing that the subject of your drawings seem to diverse and thought out!

I am glad that you have another avenue for your expression! Heheh.

This is very cool. Looks like an illustration from True Detective or Ellery Queen.
