Boxcar 'Vertigo'

I have happy memories of this release. I recall purchasing a cassette tape of Boxcar's 'Vertigo' and Anything Box's 'Peace' in a small electronics shop outside Nee Soon Camp fifteen or sixteen years ago. Earlier, a reviewer in the local papers who hated electronic music and synthpop had slammed the two releases. Based on that, I knew that it would be as far from the traditional dinosaur rock that he had pandered to. Thus, I knew I had to try them.

'Vertigo' has been compared to the New Order of the eighties. Based on the vocal approach, the dance-oriented sound and the use of guitars in the Peter Hook mode...

1. Gas Stop (Who Do You Think You Are)
2. Insect
3. Vertigo
4. Freemason (You Broke the Promise)
5. Comet
6. Hit & Run
7. 900 Hours
8. Lelore
9. Cruel to You
10. This Is the Town
11. Index

It's a terrific release with singles 'Gas Stop', 'Insect', 'Freemason', 'Hit & Run' and possibly 'Lelore'. The second album was, however lacklustre. Pity.

"Freemason" is a fantastic track and I too fondly recall it from the late eighties. In fact, when a local radio station first played it on their dance music program, I thought it was a new New Order single. They were kind of like the Camaflauge to Depeche Mode (Boxcar). The duo Red Flag comes to mind as well.

Anyhow, it's funny how those dino-rock guys can be. I dealt with that back in college when the one dude who worked at this mom and pop record store always gave me some kind of attitude (always playing Queen) when i'd order stuff like 808 State, stuff from the early AI series on Warp, or Front 242. Luckily we don't have to deal with that anymore if we don't want to!

Steve, that is indeed a fantastic track. They do have a very 'New Order' kind of soud.

What do you think of their second album?

Yes, the dino-rock guys. Like you said, we don't have to deal with them if we don't want to. We can listen to the stations we like on the internet, make our own CD compilations, playlists and more.

And also trade tracks like never before!
